Self-Awareness Books

In over 45 years as a practicing psychologist, social entrepreneur, and professor, I have learned that emotional intelligence is the key to success in work and in life. I also know that becoming more self-aware is the key to developing strong emotional intelligence. I have taught, coached, and counseled people on how to become more self-aware and how to develop their social-emotional competencies. Both activities lead to higher emotional intelligence. This book presents the best practices developed and delivered in my teaching and in my psychology practice. Some of the stories and exercises in this book came from my previous book Balanced Leadership in Unbalanced Times (2009). I published some of the stories and exercises as articles on my blog at RobPasick.com. Please visit as I will continue to write there. I wrote this book because not everyone who needs this information is here at the University of Michigan to take my class. While it’s nice to have a teacher and coach to help you through the process, you can learn a lot by yourself through reading this book and working on its exercises. If you follow the process, you’ll end up with a self-made vision for success in both work and life. Furthermore, you will learn to set goals and develop the support that will enable you to make your dreams come true.

Self-awareness is the bedrock of emotional intelligence that enables you to see your talents, shortcomings, and potential. But you won’t be able to achieve true self-awareness with the usual quarterly feedback and self-reflection alone.

This book will teach you how to understand your thoughts and emotions, how to persuade your colleagues to share what they really think of you, and why self-awareness will spark more productive and rewarding relationships with your employees and bosses.

HOW TO BE HUMAN AT WORK.

The HBR Emotional Intelligence Series features smart, essential reading on the human side of professional life from the pages of Harvard Business Review. Each book in the series offers proven research showing how our emotions impact our work lives, practical advice for managing difficult people and situations, and inspiring essays on what it means to tend to our emotional well-being at work. Uplifting and practical, these books describe the social skills that are critical for ambitious professionals to master.

This might look like a self-help book. It might even read like one. Once you dive into its pages, however, you will find some differences. Unlike others of its kind, this book does not promise results or give expert opinions. It is neither a miracle cure nor a magic potion. It does not pretend to have all the answers.

Rather, this book is a plea for self-trust and a gentle guide to self-awareness. Instead of helping you become who you think you should be, The Art of Talking to Yourself hopes to introduce you to someone more interesting: who you are.

So, this book will not fix you. But if the words herein have their intended effect, you will flip the last page realizing that you do not need to be fixed. This book, rather than a cure, is an exploration—a curious adventure into your inner mystery. If it inspires you to understand yourself better, it has done its job.

For the first time ever, the Toltec wisdom from the Ruiz family is bound together in a book of Daily Meditations.

Readers are invited on a six-month journey of daily lessons with don Miguel Ruiz Jr. that are designed to inspire, nourish, and enlighten adherents as they travel along the Toltec path.

Drawing on years of apprenticeship under his father and grandmother, don Miguel Ruiz Jr. shares Toltec lessons on Love, Faith, Agreements, and most importantly: Awareness. The purpose of each meditation is to guide readers into a deeper understanding of his or her self, as well as the world in which we live.

In the introduction to the book, don Miguel Ruiz Jr. reminds readers that progress on the Toltec path is not measured by the acquisition of things, status, or even ideas, but rather the complete and total realization that everything in the world is perfect, exactly the way it is at this moment.

“Love is accepting ourselves just the way we are, with all of our flaws and our ever-changing belief system. You are nothing else but who you are. You are not the person you were a year ago. You are not the person you will be in a year. You aren’t even the person you think you are. You simply are, and that must be enough.” –don Miguel Ruiz Jr.

The heart of Anthony de Mello’s bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello’s words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis.

In short chapters for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace.

Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

Philosopher-poet and cancer survivor Mark Nepo opens a new season of freedom and joy―an escape from deadening, asleep-at-the wheel sameness―that is both profound and clarifying.

His spiritual daybook is a summons to reclaim aliveness, liberate the self, take each day one at a time, and savor the beauty offered by life’s unfolding. Reading his poetic prose is like being given second sight, exposing the reader to life’s multiple dimensions, each one drawn with awe and affection.

The Book of Awakening is the result of Nepo’s journey of the soul and will inspire others to embark on their own. He speaks of spirit and friendship, urging readers to stay vital and in love with this life, no matter the hardships. Encompassing many traditions and voices, Nepo’s words offer insight on pain, wonder, and love. Each entry is accompanied by an exercise that will surprise and delight the reader in its mind-waking ability.

Drawing on his background, experience, and interests, coupled with pertinent use of available literature, Dr. DeVore has created a simple, masterful work of art that can support the efforts of a golfer to practice mindfulness, awareness, and self-restraint; to accomplish golf goals; and to become his-her best coach, caddie, and partner. Dr. DeVore is convinced that awareness of the Self, life, and the game differentiates golfers, creates the “best of the best,” and is the most important ingredient on every shot.
